Solo improvisations at the (prepared) piano

While improvisation is probably my most frequent way of being in music, for the most part it's a private practice for sketching or journaling. Sometimes, a microphone would be lying around during these episodes. Here are shared some of these archive recordings, in various styles.

Recently, I have been enjoying sharing these moments in public and presenting a repertoire that is partly improvised and partly written, notably in a concert in tribute to the pianist and friend Matthieu Acar.

With dancers

In 2014, during my residency at Schloss Solitude, I met the dancers and choreographers Desire Davids and the late Dorine Mokha. At Solitude, we worked on a collective piece, semi-written, semi-improvised, reworked in 2015 at Studios Kabako in Kisangani (DRCongo) at the invitation of the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula. Playing with such dancers was self-evident for my musical pulse; it became clear to me that inventing music, improvising at the piano, was my way of dancing.

You will breath differently after seeing this performance of Trio sans titre… This performance reaches in and gets to the nerves beneath our skin and change us… Thoughout the performance, the bodies of Davids and Mokha stand in a stillness that is visceral… Nicolas Mondon's piano deepens this stillness and silence. With each notes, somehow through the sound of the piano, the silence reaches deeper into our psyches.

With images and words

American visual artist and performer Danielle Adair also laid down some beautiful images on a recording of one of our prepared spoken voice/piano improvisations made during our residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2014.
